Ian Sotelo Newhall Obituary, Cause of Death – Beloved Arlington Teen Dies at 16

The world feels quieter without Ian Sotelo Newhall, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 16, leaving his family, friends, and community heartbroken by the loss of a charismatic young man whose warmth, kindness, energy, and loyalty touched everyone who knew him.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to parents Beth Newhall and Sergio Sotelo Enriquez, Ian grew up in East Arlington with his sister, Vera. He attended Hardy Elementary School, Gibbs School, Ottoson Middle School, and was entering his junior year at Arlington High School.

A beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, Ian radiated light and joy in every space he filled. He was known for his fearless, inventive, and curious spirit, as well as his passion for learning, exploring, and living life on his own terms.

Ian loved deeply—his family, his sister, his girlfriend, his community, and the friends who filled his days with laughter and purpose. Whether on the football field or wrestling mat at Arlington High, working landscaping jobs with his buddy, or simply spending time with loved ones, Ian brought warmth and a smile everywhere he went. His recent trip to the Basque Country to visit cousins was a highlight of his summer, connecting him to his Aita’s culture.

He is survived by his parents, Beth and Sergio; his sister, Vera Sotelo Newhall; his maternal grandmother, Marilyn Newhall of Haverhill, MA; his aunt, Jodi Newhall, and cousins Ayla, Malin, and Wren Cantwell of Massachusetts; his aunt, Alicia Sotelo, and uncle, Antonio Garcia of Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain; his uncle, Carlos Sotelo, aunt Susana Gutierrez, and cousins Alize, Haritz, Enara, and Ur of Pamplona, Spain.

Ian’s absence leaves an ache that will be felt for a long time, but his memory will be carried forward in the stories, laughter, and love he shared so freely. The Sotelo/Newhall family extends their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received and asks that all keep them in their hearts and prayers during this difficult time.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Ian’s life will be held on September 13th at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.

🕊️ May Ian Sotelo Newhall rest in eternal peace. His light, love, and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him.
