Carlo Borlenghi Obituary, Cause of Death – Renowned Italian Yacht Photographer Dies at 70

Carlo Borlenghi, the internationally acclaimed Italian yacht photographer whose remarkable images captured some of the world’s most prestigious sailing events, passed away during the night between August 2 and 3, 2026, at the age of 70. His death marks the loss of one of the most influential visual storytellers in the world of competitive sailing.

Born in Bellano, on the shores of Lake Como, Borlenghi dedicated more than four decades to documenting the sport. His work covered iconic editions of the America’s Cup, chronicling legendary campaigns from Azzurra and Moro di Venezia to Luna Rossa. He also photographed major international regattas, including numerous events associated with Rolex, as well as extraordinary solo voyages of renowned sailors such as Giovanni Soldini and other around-the-world expeditions.

Borlenghi’s photographs earned worldwide recognition, appearing in leading sailing and photography publications across the globe. His work was compiled into several books that became essential references for sailing enthusiasts and maritime photography admirers.

Despite spending much of his career documenting life at sea, Borlenghi often joked that he never learned to swim, welcoming a swimming lesson as a humorous gift from friends. Beyond his international acclaim, he remained deeply connected to his hometown of Bellano. In 2022, he photographed more than one-third of the town’s residents as part of the “Portrait of Bellano” project, with the portraits later displayed throughout the community. In 2024, during Milan Design Week, he presented the exhibition Navigare l’impossibile in un mare di algoritmi, exploring the creative possibilities of artificial intelligence in photography.

Throughout his career, Borlenghi worked closely alongside his wife, Alessandra, who was also his trusted collaborator.

Funeral services for Carlo Borlenghi will be held on Wednesday, August 5, at 11:30 a.m. in Bellano, where family, friends, colleagues, and admirers will gather to celebrate his life and legacy.

🕊️ Carlo Borlenghi will be remembered not only for his breathtaking images but also for his humor, dedication, and deep connection to his community. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of photographers and sailing enthusiasts worldwide.
